About ‘A Seat On the Mat’

Name inspired by Shirley Chisholm and Solange Knowles in their works regarding A Seat At The Table and what that means for Black and other marginalized people.

It’s an honor to be able to have a seat at our table [mat] and for us to open up in this way and for us to feel safe enough to have these conversations and share them.

Student Affirmations

K.M.- “She asked me clear questions to understand my needs and built a series of classes designed to help me learn new asanas, and find new muscle groups. For the first time, she helped me learn to appreciate pranayama and meditation. By breathing with me for a few minutes, she designed and led me through the meditations that helped me get closer to ‘dropping in’ to my body and quieting my mind.

Beyond all of this, Felicia is someone whose voice should be centered in the yoga space. She is one of those humans who leads from authenticity and love, and endeavors to create room for those whom yoga in the western, culturally appropriated world has marginalized. She is a constant learner, as demonstrated by her earning her master’s in yoga therapy as she continues to teach.

She is someone everyone should find a way to learn with and alongside. I am better for knowing her and being her student.”

A.W. - “From the very first class, I have enjoyed Felicia’s enthusiasm, patience, and love of Yoga. I have taken Yoga at a number of places and from many different instructors. None was as skilled or as sensitive to individual needs as Felicia. She makes everyone feel welcome and comfortable. “

S.C. - “Felicia was meant to teach yoga! The way she relates to clients is so refreshing and her explanations of the poses and what you should be feeling is spot on. I’ve had a few private sessions with her and asked for a sequence could do at home to open up my tight hips which really helped relieve my lower back pain.”

B.B- "I have loved my time attending Yoga Therapy with Fela (Felicia).

I am so grateful for this experience. When I started I had no idea what to expect but I knew I needed a different approach to therapy that honored my love of movement.

As soon as I started I felt at ease and excited about what this journey would bring. Felicia's practice integrated mind, body, and spirit for me, and I always walked away from every session feeling better than when I came in, and more grounded in my body and in my voice. Fela showed me what strength and security look like, physically and emotionally, which is a lesson that will never leave me. Finally, Fela is an incredible vibe-setter (if that's a term haha), the yoga event that she hosted was not only fun and beautiful, but it was a space where women of color gathered in a light-hearted way - I felt so seen!

Overall, I learned so much during our 8 sessions, but it feels like this is only the beginning. Thank you for helping me start a new chapter, and helping me open my heart to more of what my life has to offer.”
